national exhibition of performance design 2019 - 2023
UK Festival of Performance Design: Feb-April 2023 | Prague Quadrennial: June 2023 | Publication Series out March 2023-Summer 2024
The national exhibition project for 2019 - 2023 is about welcoming designers, makers and audiences back, to catch up on the landscape of UK performance design. It’s a chance to reconnect, be together, and reach out to new communities and audiences.
hello stranger emphasises responsivity and openness in the context of a changing world. As we emerge from the pandemic and face up to climate crisis, legacies of inequality, global conflict and the increasing prevalence of digital technologies in our lives, we face a changed landscape for performance design and scenography. How are performance designers responding and adapting to the key challenges of our times? How is our artform evolving in response to a changing world? What voices have been missing from the conversation?
hello stranger will take the form of a festival of performance design, taking place in 13 regions and countries across the UK from February to April 2023. These events are designed and curated by local designers. Building on the regional hearts of Staging Places, SBTD’s 2019 exhibition project led by Fiona Watt, the festival will shine a light on the last four years of UK performance design. The curatorial teams represent a grassroots approach to the exhibition project - highlighting regional concerns and a diverse range of voices.
